Healthy Holiday Tips

Healthy Holiday Tips,

Be the pinnacle of health and wellness this holiday season!

It goes without saying that keeping yourself and your family healthy throughout the holiday season in Wisconsin can be a challenge. When you combine chillier temps, housebound days, pre-holiday preparation, and year-end deadlines, not to mention kids passing around colds at school like they’re playing “Hot Potato”, you can end up spending the holidays under the covers!

No matter how many inherent seasonal risk factors you face, there are ways to prepare for and get through the holiday season virtually unscathed.  At The WIN Group Insurance Agency, we are wishing you a Happy and Abundantly Healthy Holiday Season, so here are a few tips to help you stay well and enjoy it!

CONSIDER “STICKING IT” TO THE FLU!  –  Flu shots seem to be available at practically every drug store or pharmacy in Wisconsin these days. In fact according to the CDC “For the 2020-2021 season, manufacturers have projected they will provide as many as 194-198 million doses of flu vaccine, which is more than the 175 million dose record set during the 2019-2020 flu season.” Discuss with your doctor the pros and cons of flu shots for yourself and your family.

GET SOME ZZZ’S!  –  The holiday hustle and bustle can interfere with normal sleep patterns, yet sleep is essential to health and healing. The below chart as provided by the Mayo Clinic illustrates the proper amount of sleep by age to maintain good health.

Age group The recommended amount of sleep
Newborns 14 to 17 hours a day
12 months About 10 hours at night, plus 4 hours of naps
2 years About 11 to 12 hours at night, plus a 1- to 2-hour afternoon nap
3 to 5 years 10 to 13 hours
6 to 13 years 9 to 11 hours
14 to 17 years 8 to 10 hours
Adults 7 to 9 hours

I don’t know about you but with all, there is to do during the holiday season this can really present a challenge for meeting the above expectations. Consider prioritizing, checklists,(and keep them realistic), if you have family, delegate some of your workload (you can tell the kids it’s an early Christmas present), this can keep you on track to completing what needs to be done and ensuring you get to bed on time!

FILL THE FRIDGE!  –  It’s easy to allow your pantry to start looking like a sweets shop as the holidays near. Take care to stock your refrigerator and cabinets with healthy snacks and ingredients for balanced meals. Think Fruit! An article from Women’s Health states that some of the Best Winter Fruits are oranges, pears, cranberries, and pomegranates! Nuts, lower-calorie snacks, cheese, veggies, and lean proteins are also great alternatives.

GET REAL! –  Emotional health is important too! Be realistic about what can be expected through the season. Just because it’s the holidays doesn’t mean that Aunt Jess & Uncle Joe will finally mend their rocky relationship. Work on staying present and worrying about today! Stay connected with friends and loved ones. If you or someone you know is having difficulty during the holiday season seek help. Places like Step Up For Mental Health can be a great start for finding local resources and providing “One to One, Peer Chats”.

KEEP MOVING! –  Despite the many holiday temptations to just relax, don’t give in to being a couch potato! Get to the gym, do some yoga, take a brisk walk, or even go cross country skiing, JUST GET MOVING!
